Mastering the 100s Chart, Decade Bridges, and Skip Counting in K–2

Counting and writing to 100 is the capstone math goal of Kindergarten (CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.1) and the launchpad for 1st Grade place value (1.NBT.A.1, extending the counting sequence to 120). When students trace numbers in structured 10-per-row bands, they visually discover that every column shares the same ones digit (e.g., 4, 14, 24, 34) while every row advances the tens digit.

For young hands, writing all 100 numbers in a single sitting can cause pencil fatigue. We recommend starting with our Skip Counting by 10s and 5s sheets or printing 20 numbers per day (1–20, 21–40, 41–60, 61–80, 81–100) before celebrating the 100th Day of School with the full 1–100 chart.

Frequently Asked Questions: Numbers 1 to 100 Tracing Worksheets (Hundreds Chart & Skip Counting PDF)

In historical English vowel shifts, the vowel in "Forty" shortened to an r-controlled /ɔːr/ sound and dropped the "u" by the 16th century. Contrast "Four" (4), "Fourteen" (14), and "Forty" (40) side-by-side so students never lose points on spelling tests!
