The 4 High-Bridge ("Tow-Truck") Cursive Letters: b, o, v, w

Unlike 22 lowercase letters that finish on the baseline, b, o, v, and w finish high at the dashed midline!

Mastering Cursive Word Ligatures and High "Tow-Truck" Joins (b, o, v, w)

Once students can form individual cursive letters, 90% of word-level legibility issues happen on just four "Bridge Letters" (also called Tow-Truck or Clothesline letters): lowercase b, o, v, and w. While the other 22 lowercase letters finish their stroke down on the red baseline, b, o, v, and w finish up high at the dashed midline.

When a bridge letter is followed by a vowel or consonant (as in "boat", "moon", "love", or "water"), the connecting ligature stays suspended near the midline. Practicing our dedicated Bridge-Join Word Sheet trains students to glide across that high bridge without adding extra loops.

Always keep the pencil moving continuously from the first letter to the last letter of the word! Only lift the pencil AFTER the final exit tail of the word is finished, then go back left-to-right to dot the i/j and cross the t/x.
